Landslide

“Landslide” is Track 8 on Fleetwood Mac’s 10th studio album, the self-titled Fleetwood Mac (1975). Written by Stevie Nicks, “Landslide” has resonated with music listeners for its heartfelt sentiment, becoming a standout in the vast Fleetwood Mac catalog.

In 1973, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham released their first album Buckingham Nicks on the recording label Polydor Records, but the label abruptly dropped the duo when the album failed to meet sales expectations. This experience contributed to the song’s inspiration.

Stevie’s father Jess often thought “Landslide” was written about him, but Stevie actually had then-boyfriend Lindsey in mind, while contemplating her future in music. The song is based on a poem she wrote in Aspen, Colorado, where she was visiting friends. At the time, Lindsey was away touring as the guitarist for Don Everly’s band.

“Landslide” was one of many of the songs intended for a proposed second Buckingham Nicks album. Other songs in this group included “Monday Morning,” “Rhiannon,” and “I’m So Afraid” — all of which were used for Fleetwood Mac.

In 1998, 23 years after its release, “Landslide” was issued as a single to help promote Fleetwood Mac’s live album The Dance (1997). The song reached #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart and #10 on Adult Contemporary. The commercial maxi single includes the 1997 live version and three remixes of the original 1975 song, the latter of which featured previously unreleased studio vocals.

Over the years, “Landslide” has been covered by many artists, such as Smashing Pumpkins (1994), Tori Amos (1996),  Bush (2011), Lady Antebellum (2013), and most lucratively by the Dixie Chicks (2002).

Landslide (The Dance Version)

Lyrics

I took my love, took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
Oh, I’m getting older too

Ah, ah, I take my love, take it down
Ah, ah, I climb a mountain and I turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
Oh, oh, the landslide will bring it down
